My Story
My name is Adam Levine. I am a local real estate professional, a Messianic Jew, and a survivor of a broken system. I was wrongfully Baker Acted TWO times:
- New Horizons — Port St. Lucie
- Port St. Lucie Hospital — Port St. Lucie
These facilities operate not as places of healing, but as prisons designed to maximize profit at the expense of human dignity and freedom. They are owned and operated by individuals who exploit the Baker Act for financial gain — stripping innocent people of their constitutional rights.
The Lasting Damage: PTSD That Never Leaves
I recently got a cauliflower ear from training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. It needed to be drained — a simple medical procedure. Any normal person would just go to the doctor.
But I was terrified to go.
Not because of the pain — but because the last time I went to a hospital, I had chest pains for days and thought I was having a cardiac arrest. I went in seeking help for what I believed was a heart attack. Hospital staff administered morphine to treat the potential cardiac issue — a legitimate medical intervention for someone experiencing chest pain.
After medical testing revealed my heart was fine, I was still impaired from the morphine that the hospital had administered. While under the influence of this medication, I expressed my faith in Jesus Christ and stated I would go to heaven if I died.
This is the critical moment: While I was impaired on morphine that hospital staff had given me, unable to think clearly or defend myself, hospital staff decided my expression of religious faith was evidence of a mental health crisis. They initiated a Baker Act hold against me.
I am convinced that hospital staff administered additional medication to sedate me further for transport — I have no memory of ever arriving at Port St. Lucie Behavioral Hospital. I woke up there, drugged and confused, with no recollection of being transported or consenting to the transfer.
Let this be clear: Hospital staff used their own medication against me. They treated my chest pain with morphine, and then, while I was impaired and unable to defend myself, they weaponized my expression of faith as justification for involuntary psychiatric detention. Expressing religious belief is not a mental health crisis. Believing in an afterlife is not suicidal ideation. Yet my civil rights were stripped away while I was impaired by medication they administered, and a for-profit psychiatric facility collected the insurance payout. This is not healthcare. This is predation.
Who Owns These Facilities?
Follow the money. Many of these for-profit psychiatric facilities in South Florida are owned by the same network of operators who have turned involuntary commitment into a billion-dollar industry. They use the Baker Act as a tool to fill beds, bill insurance companies, and keep patients trapped as long as possible. This is not healthcare — this is organized exploitation.
Witnesses Coming Forward
We are not alone. Multiple witnesses have come forward to expose the horrific conditions and practices within these facilities:
- Shannon Billings: Drugged at just 13 years old at New Horizons.
- Dillon Bates: Trapped in the system for 7 agonizing years.
- Vivian K. Otero-Hill’s son: Wrongfully Baker Acted simply for expressing that he was depressed.
- Mary Abt: A courageous witness stepping forward against the New Horizons children’s unit.
